Baby falcons hatch in love nest atop bridge
Tuesday, June 3rd 2008, 4:00 AM
The miracle is not that newborn peregrine falcon chicks are nesting atop a tower of the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge - it's that they haven't been charged tolls.
The two chicks were born last week in what has become a well-appointed nest in a box on a never-used platform atop the south tower on the Queens side of the bridge.
The chicks were spotted by Bridge Maintenance Superintendent Carlton Cyrus and a wildlife biologist/falcon expert when they climbed the 218-foot-tall tower last week.
Seems the same female falcon and her mate have nested and raised chicks at the same address for several years. The maintenance crew keeps notes on their progress.
"We wear protective gear and are careful to keep a safe distance so that the mother does not perceive us as a threat," Cyrus said.
