Artificial meat? Food for thought by 2050 Leading scientists say meat grown in vats may be necessary to feed 9 billion people expected to be alive by middle of century Artificial meat grown in vats may be needed if the 9 billion people expected to be alive in 2050 are to be adequately fed without destroying the earth, some of the world's leading scientists report today. But a major academic assessment of future global food supplies, led by John Beddington, the UK government chief scientist, suggests that even with new technologies such as genetic modification and nanotechnology, hundreds of millions of people may still go hungry owing to a combination of climate change, water shortages and increasing food consumption. In a set of 21 papers published by the Royal Society, the scientists from many disciplines and countries say that little more land is available for food production, but add that the challenge of increasing global food supplies by as much as 70% in the next 40 years is not insurmountable. Although more than one in seven people do not have enough protein and energy in their diet today, many of the papers are optimistic QC www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/16/artificial-meat-food-royal-society

The man who lives without money QC Mark Boyle, 31, gave up using money in November 2008. He lives in a caravan that he got from Freecycle (uk.freecycle.org), which is parked at an organic farm near Bristol, where Boyle volunteers three days a week. He grows his own food, has a wood-burning stove and produces electricity from a solar panel (it cost £360 before the experiment started). Chin Up....there's that smile I miss ...♥ ya lots!!!! Man it's like getting close to Christmas 2010 , I see all kinds of strange lights , Red Lights , Green Lights , the thing is even though Red Lights at Night is like a Sign , Do ya see Nativity or Activity He has a mobile phone for incoming calls only and a solar-powered laptop. Boyle, who has been vegan for six years, set up the Freeconomy in 2007 (justfortheloveofit.org), an online network that encourages people to share skills or possessions and now has 17,000 members. The Moneyless Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living (Oneworld Publications, £10.99) is out now , It all started in a pub. My friend and I were talking about all the problems in the world, such as sweatshops, environmental destruction, factory farms, animal testing, wars over resources. I realised they were all, in their own way, connected to money. I decided to give up cash. I sold my houseboat in Bristol and gave up my job at an organic food company. I made a list of everything I bought and tried to figure out which I could get in another way. For toothpaste I use a mixture of cuttlefish bone and wild fennel seeds. Things like iPods you just have to knock off the list, but birds in the trees around my kitchen have become my new iPod. Everything takes more time and effort in a moneyless world. Handwashing my clothes in a sink of cold water, using laundry liquid made by boiling up nuts on my rocket stove, can take two hours, instead of half an hour using a washing machine. It was meant to be just for a year but I enjoy the lifestyle so much that I’m just going to keep living like this. I’ve never been happier or fitter. I had a very normal childhood. I think at first my parents wondered what on earth I was doing. But now they totally support me and they say that they may even try it themselves. Sometimes it is frustrating trying to socialite with no money. I grew up in Northern Ireland where it’s a show of manliness to buy your mates the first round. But I invite them back to my caravan instead to have homemade cider around the campfire !!! www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/greenerliving/7951968/The-man-who-lives-without-money.html

OMG An attorney for Paris Hilton's boyfriend raised questions about whether Las Vegas police were justified in pulling over her SUV Friday night, prompting the actress' arrest for allegedly possessing cocaine. Hilton was arrested Saturday with her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub operator Cy Waits, who was driving the black SUV stopped by police at 11:22 p.m. Friday after they smelled marijuana. A police lieutenant found 0.8 grams of cocaine in a purse Hilton was carrying, officials said. Based on the police report, she is expected to be charged with felony drug possession by Clark County prosecutors. Hilton denied that the purse was hers but said other items inside, including asthma medication, credit cards and $1,300 in cash, were hers, officials said. Waits' attorney, Richard Schonfeld, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he believes the stop was improper. He said he does not think there was evidence Watt broke any traffic laws or was driving in an impaired manner. Therefore, he said, police had no cause to search the SUV. He said he was "troubled" by the way the stop was handled. A police report said Waits failed a field sobriety test. Hilton and Waits were stopped near the Wynn Hotel, where a crowd gathered as officers prepared to search the Cadillac Escalade for narcotics, according to the police report. Hilton told the officers she needed to use the bathroom and was escorted into the hotel where the cocaine was allegedly found in Hilton's purse and we think she needs an intervention QC latimesblogs.latimes.com

The largest collection of Smurf memorabilia, the longest dog tongue, and the most football management rejection letters could only be together in one place -- the annual list of Guinness World Records. All of them have made the 2011 edition, released Thursday. The Smurf collection involves 1,061 different items owned by Stephen Parkes, 44, of Nottingham, England. He said he began collecting them in 1976 when he was 10, and that today he will pay as much as 500 pounds ($780) for a rare item. "It's great to get in the book, although I think I'm going to get a fair amount of stick (criticism) from friends when they see the photos," Parkes said QC edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/09/16/uk.guinness.world.records/

OMG FAA Can't Identify NYC's 'UFO' Lights , Those weird lights that caused a sensation in the sky over New York City yesterday remain an official mystery today, reports ABC News. "We are not able to make an identification of what the objects were," says an FAA spokeswoman. "We know they weren't aircraft or helicopters. We wouldn't be able to say if they were balloons or something else." The sightings prompted scores of calls to the NYPD and the FAA. "It looked like a jellyfish made of lights that just hovered in the sky like it wanted to be seen," one New Yorker tells the Post. "I was half expecting the aliens to beam down and introduce themselves." No big mystery, one author on the paranormal tells ABC" ( another theory ? QC

OMG a mini ice age coming, says man who beats weather experts , The man who repeatedly beats the Met Office at its own game Well, folks, it's tea-time on Sunday and for anyone involved in keeping people moving it has been a hell of a weekend. Thousands have had their journeys wrecked, tens of thousands have been delayed getting away for Christmas; and for those Londoners who feel aggrieved by the performance of any part of our transport services, I can only say that we are doing our level best. Almost the entire Tube system was running on Sunday and we would have done even better if it had not been for a suicide on the Northern Line, and the temporary stoppage that these tragedies entail. Of London's 700 bus services, only 50 were on diversion, mainly in the hillier areas. On Saturday, we managed to keep the West End plentifully supplied with customers, and retailers reported excellent takings on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. We have kept the Transport for London road network open throughout all this. We have about 90,000 tons of grit in stock, and the gritters were out all night to deal with this morning's rush. And yet we have to face the reality of the position across the country QC www.smh.com.au/environment/weather/theres-a-mini-ice-age-coming-says-man-who-beats-weather-experts-20101221-1945a.htmlAttachments:

OMG The sun rises two days early in Greenland, sparking fears that climate change is accelerating , Here is Quaaludes Advice , Solar Powered Refrigerated Islands for the Bears & Seals up North also painting everything in front of the Retreating Glaciers White so they continue to Grow more Ice - anyway The sun over Greenland has risen two days early, baffling scientists and sparking fears that Arctic icecaps are melting faster than previously thought. Experts say the sun should have risen over the Arctic nation's most westerly town, Ilulissat, yesterday, ending a month-and-a-half of winter darkness. But for the first time in history light began creeping over the horizon at around 1pm on Tuesday - 48 hours ahead of the usual date of 13 January. The mysterious sunrise has confused scientists, although it is believed the most likely explanation is that it is down to the lower height of melting icecaps allowing the sun's light to penetrate through earlier , Thomas Posch, of the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Vienna, said that a local change of the horizon was 'by far the most obvious explanation'. He said as the ice sinks, so to does the horizon, creating the illusion that the sun has risen early. This theory, based on the gradual decline of Greenland's ice sheet, is backed by recent climate studies. A report by the World Meteorology Organisation shows that temperatures in Greenland have risen around 3C above average over the last year. It also reported that December was much warmer than usual with rainfall instead of snow recorded for the first time in Kuujjuaq since records began , the sun's early appearance could have an astronomical explanation. But Wolfgang Lenhardt, director of the department of geophysics at the Central Institute for Meteorology in Vienna, scotched this theory. He said: 'The constellation of the stars has not changed. If that had happened, there would have been an outcry around the world. 'The data of the Earth's axis and Earth's rotation are monitored continuously and meticulously and we would know if that had happened QC
