www.vortex.com/profneon.mp3A ROBOT billed as a 'toaster on legs' has smashed a world record — by walking 14.3 miles in 11 hours. The Ranger, built by US scientists, set the record for 'untethered robotic walking' earlier this month. Guided by students using a remote control, the odd-looking robot strode 108.5 times around a 212m indoor track. It completed about 70,000 steps before it needed a recharge. Andy Ruina, 57, lab manager on the project at New York's Cornell University, said: "The Ranger is nothing special to look at but the motion is rather graceful in a way you don't see in many robots." The Ranger, whose parts alone cost £15,000, took four years to perfect — but runs on batteries and cost less than 1p to travel four miles. It smashed the previous world record set by Boston Dynamics' BigDog in Boston by 1.5 miles. Imagine a machine which accepts CAD drawings, then produces a three dimensional prototype within a few hours for $100 - it now exists. www.gizmag.com/go/2578/The Ranger is energy efficient because it copies the physics of human walking, using gravity and momentum to roll its legs forward. While the movements of other robots are controlled by motors, the Ranger has a more laid-back gait QC Read more: www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3064756/Toaster-on-legs-breaks-record.html

About twenty miles south of downtown on I-55. It just feels like it's to hell and gone because it's in Jefferson County, an area known more for casual family eateries than something as fine and formal as Taylor's. Like most of St. Charles County and the far western edge of St. Louis County, the burgeoning area of south St. Louis and northern Jefferson counties have seen, until recently, little in the way of elegant-dining options despite enjoying about a 3.5 percent growth in per-capita income. Economic analysis aside, let's just say that there's more disposable income down there than I ever imagined. And nobody knows this better than Chris Bates, owner of Taylor's, Bates Electric and a custom-home building business. Bates put his construction know-how to work in renovating the late-1800s two-story structure that houses Taylor's. Once a school and later a bar, the building was in poor shape when Bates bought it four years ago. After months of work he and his wife, Stephanie, named the restaurant after their young daughter and opened for business in April 2003. The design is decidedly formal and Victorian, with maroon patterned wallpaper, settees, dark velvet curtains with gold tassels, a grand piano and a massive chandelier. An open staircase leads to a mezzanine level that features tables overlooking the first-floor dining area , we are not the most Dangerous City - it's bulls^it , we are a safe Sports City , with the best food and most Manufacturing & Service jobs in the U.S.A QC www.riverfronttimes.com/2004-06-09/restaurants/far-out/Attachments:

Polar shift shuts down airport runway in Tampa This morning I learned that the north magnetic pole is shifting toward Russia at 40 miles per year (I've seen 40 km in some reports, but let's not quibble) and that as a result the airport in Tampa, Fla. is temporarily closing a runway so it can be renumbered. This isn't news in the sense that it hasn't happened before elsewhere or wasn't expected to happen again. It's news in the sense that many people - including yours truly and I'd venture to guess a fair number of you - were not aware of the connection between the shifting phenomenon and airports. (It's also news if you use Tampa International Airport, of course - and to a much lesser extent -- because the 2012 doomsday crowd has latched onto it as more evidence of the futility of long-term financial planning.) From a story on MyFox Tampa Bay: Tampa International Airport was forced to readjust its runways Thursday to account for the movement of the Earth's magnetic fields, information that pilots rely upon to navigate planes. Thanks to the fluctuations in the force, the airport has closed its primary runway until Jan. 13 to change taxiway signs to account for the shift, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Right off the bat, I didn't know that the numbering on taxiway signs was related in to the location of the north magnetic pole. Gold star to those of you who did. Wikipedia has it covered, naturally: Runways are named by a number between 01 and 36, which is generally one tenth of the magnetic azimuth of the runway's heading: a runway numbered 09 points east (90°), runway 18 is south (180°), runway 27 points west (270°) and runway 36 points to the north (360° rather than 0°). However, runways in North America that lie within the Northern Domestic Airspace of Canada are numbered relative to true north because proximity to the magnetic North Pole makes the magnetic declination large. Back to the MyFox Tampa bay story: The poles are generated by movements within the Earth's inner and outer cores, though the exact process isn't exactly understood. They're also constantly in flux, moving a few degrees every year, but the changes are almost never of such a magnitude that runways require adjusting, said Paul Takemoto, a spokesman for the FAA. The key word there is almost. So just how often is something like (renumbering runways) necessary? "It happens so infrequently that they wouldn't venture a guess," Takemoto told FoxNews.com. "In fact, you're the first journalist to ever ask me about it." With just a bit of online searching I was able to learn that it happened in Minnesota in 2002. And, back to Wikipedia: "In July 2009 for example, London Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom changed its runway designations from 05/23 to 04/22 overnight." So it happens. And chances are it will happen in 2013, too QC www.networkworld.com/community/blog/polar-shift-shuts-down-airport-runway-tampa?t51hb&hpg1=mp

paranormal cases from Spain, South America and the Caribbean Monday, April 18, 2011 Change of Scenery: Other Dimensions, Other People Change of Scenery: Other Dimensions, Other People By Scott Corrales (c) 2011 Naysayers are fond of deriding believers in high-strangeness for their excessive reliance on “anecdotal” material. Seldom does the Unknown sit still for a portrait, much less for a DNA analysis or the questions of a fact-checker. So the currency of the elusive realm of the paranormal will be the anecdotal for a long time to come – especially when we receive tantalizing bits of material from sources like Venezuela’s El Tiempo newspaper, in which writer Segundo Peña writes of a strange incident in the city of Mérida (Venezuela) involving a faculty member of the ULA (University of the Andes), a native of Trujillo, who walked to his car in the university parking lot in broad daylight, seen by many witnesses, including waving students and fellow professors. He opened the door, entered the vehicle – and was never seen again. The car remained parked where it was. “The car’s owner,” writes Peña in his article, which can be found at www.diarioeltiempo.com.ve/V3_Secciones/index.php?id=76472011&_Proc=Desp , “has been gone for over forty years (we do not mention his name out of respect for his family) Was this person abducted by strange forces alien to our own dimension? Science pursues its general research, where psychology is aware that in many cases perceptual illusions, erroneous interpretations, hallucinations and fantasy-prone personalities have sway. But the enigma is still present and unresolved.” Peña gives us no dates and no names, but the strange case is reminiscent of many other “bizarre disappearances” that have filled entire books over the past forty years. One can fancifully think that he entered his car and suddenly found himself in the same parking lot in a parallel reality, unmindful of the situation until subtle differences – subtle terrors, to be frank – made him realize that something was drastically different, or that he had lost his mind. We can speculate away. However, we are also faced with cases that give us a wealth of information that goes beyond the anecdotal: Alberto Luis Fernández, director of Spain’s Revista Avalon, posted the intriguing story of a woman who believes herself to have been brought to our reality from another. “We cannot be certain that this is a not a hoax, but it is nevertheless an interesting story, and if true, it could happen to us when we least expect it,” says Fernandez as a foreword to the story. In July 2008, a woman named Lerina García posted a message to a website asking for help. We will transcribe her message verbatim. “Hello, my name is Luz. I’m 41 and believe that I have jumped into a parallel universe. This is hard for me to discuss, as everyone will consider me psychotic and will refuse to believe me. Please, if someone has had a similar experience, please e-mail me. One day I woke up and found that everything was different – nothing spectacular or having to do with time travel and such things. I simply woke up in the same year and day on which I went to bed, but many things were different. They were small things, but sufficiently important to know that there was a point at which everything was different. “In fact, if this is a dream, then you’re all in a dream, because what I’m writing about doesn’t exist. So if someone replies, it means that they are experiencing the same reality as I am, whether it’s a dream or not. “Four months ago I awoke on a normal morning. I was in my rented home, where I’d been living for 7 years. Everything was the same, except that my bed linen was different, and I paid no attention at the time. So I went to work in my car, which was parked where I’d always parked, and it was the same office I’d worked in for the last 20 years. But when I got to my department, it wasn’t my department. It has names on the door and mine wasn’t on it. I thought I was on the wrong floor, but no, it was my own floor. I went over to the office’s wireless section and looked myself up. I still worked there, but in another department, reporting to a superior I didn’t even know. So I went to the department indicated in the directory, said I was feeling ill and left. All the contents of my handbag were the same: my credit cards, my ID, everything, but I didn’t recall having changed departments at any time. I went to the social security doctor and underwent drug and alcohol testing...all clean. I returned to work the next day and was able to make my way by asking questions and saying that I wasn’t feeling well. “My apartment is the same. Everything is unchanged. I’ve looked at all the papers I’ve kept in the house and they’re unchanged. After realizing that something strange was going on, I thought it might be some form of amnesia. Perhaps something had happened to me and I couldn’t remember a period of my life. But no, I logged on to the Internet and the day was as it should have been, and the major news items were the same as the day before. “I’ve been separated from my partner of 7 years for some six months. We broke up and I started a relationship with a fellow from my neighborhood. I know him perfectly well, having been with him for four months. I know his name, surname, address, where he works, his son from another relationship, and where he studies. Well, that fellow no longer exists. He appeared to have existed before my “jump” but there is no trace of him now. I’ve hired a detective to find him and he does not exist on this “plane”. I’ve visited a psychiatrist and its all been put down to stress. He thinks they’re hallucinations, but I know this isn’t the case. My former boyfriend is with me as though nothing had happened – apparently we never broke it off – and Agustín (my current boyfriend) appears to have never existed. He doesn’t live in the flat he used to live, and I cannot find his son. I swear to you that its true and that I’m very sane. My own family doesn’t remember things like surgery performed on my sister’s shoulder a few months ago: she has never been operated on. Small things to that effect. “Unfortunately, I cannot remember very important things from the news, but the rest of the world appears to be the same. There are many small details over the last five months and now, mere trivialities: clothing in my closet that I don’t remember buying, posts on a radio show blog that I had with my ex (and who remains my boyfriend now)...I don’t know, it’s foolish, but the fact is that I’m sane and this is all true. PLEASE, if someone has had a similar experience, please contact me says " inexplicata.blogspot.com/2011/04/change-of-scenery-other-dimensions.htmlAttachments:

Although "electromagnetic radiation" is the formal scientific term for what Heinrich Hertz demonstrated with his simple spark transmitter in the 1880s, in addition to "radio" numerous other descriptive phrases were used in the early days, including various permutations of "Hertzian waves", "electric waves", "ether waves", "spark telegraphy", "space telegraphy", "aerography" and "wireless". In the November 30, 1901 Electrical Review, a letter from G. C. Dietz offered "atmography" as the answer to What Shall We Call It?, but the suggestion fell on deaf ears. Spark, Space, Wireless, Etheric, Hertzian Wave or Cableless Telegraphy--Which? by A. Frederick Collins in the August 24, 1901 Western Electrician wondered whether the question might eventually become academic, for "In the distant future when all wire systems, both telegraph and telephone, have been superseded by the so-called wireless, there will be no confusing qualifying adjectives, for there will be no dual systems requiring qualification, and wireless telegraphy and telephony will be spoken of as simply telegraphy and telephony." So, what's the difference between wireless and radio? "There ain't none" -- both refer to the exact same thing -- explains Edward C. Hubert in Radio vs. Wireless, from the January, 1925, Radio News QC earlyradiohistory.us/index.html
