Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck were examined by doctors Friday night. Family members say Ben watched TV during his captivity, and even saw his parents plead for his safe return. After they were reunited with their parents, both Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby were taken to a SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital to be examined. They arrived there at about 6 p.m., and were expected to be released late Friday night.During the evening hours, more and more families started showing up to celebrate. "I think it's safe to say they're on cloud 9, and we are too," said Bob Davidson, a spokesperson for the hospital. "They both look really good, they both look much better than you might expect them too. Of course, there is still a lot of examination left to do, and things that need to be looked at, but on the surface, they look really great," he said.Ben Ownby was famished when he arrived at the sheriff's department.
Sources say he practically inhaled chocolate cupcakes from the vending machine.
Shawn Hornbeck went from being a pre-teen of 11 when he disappeared to a full-fledged teenager, almost ready to drive when he resurfaced. His family was holding on Friday night. Davidson said, "I was back there talking to Shawn, and his grandmother just can't let go of his hand, and they're all talking about family memories, and things, and he has a chance now to make new memories. That's something that for a while seemed unlikely that it would happen."The Ownby family, when told of Ben's recovery, broke down in tears. Friday night, Ben's mom wouldn't take her eyes off her son. "It's the same for Ben, you know, he's just sitting in a chair, grinning, and while I talked to his family, his mother sat across the room, and she didn't take her eyes off him the whole time," said Davidson.
A family member told NewsChannel 5 that Ben was actually able to watch television during his captivity, and he saw some of his family members making pleas on television for his safe return.
There remain many questions. Among them, how the kidnapper was able to hold the boys in captivity. A family member says Ben was not physically restrained or held in the apartment.Michael Devlin spent 20 years working at a Kirkwood Imo's, the past 10 as a manager.
